The two bright stars to the left in the cluster are the parents, Atlas and Pleione, hence also the more common name Pleiades (the children of Pleione). The seven sisters are Alcyone, Merope, Electra, Maia, Celaeno, Taygeta and Asterope (Messier45.com)

Several Pleiads appear surrounded by intricate blue filaments of light. This nebulosity is the result of starlight scattering (reflecting) off minute grains of interstellar dust in the vicinity. The dust particles are inside a cloud of mostly hydrogen gas that the cluster seems to be plowing into (Steven Gibson, www.naic.edu/~gibson/pleiades/)

This was a 20 minute exposure, guided and captured in the early morning of September 25, 2011 from Zodiac Ranch in Fort Davis, TX.

The sky was perfectly still with excellent transparency and great seeing.

NGC 7293, Helix Nebula (Eye of God)

NGC 7293 is commonly called the "Eye of God" do to it's distinctive shape. To see the two dark areas in the object, you will need at least an 8" telescope.

NGC 2841 is in the constellation Ursa Major (Big Dipper). I used a program called Nebulosity to capture, stack, and process 30 frames including 30 dark frames. Seeing conditions, transparency, and other variables affect the image including other atmospheric conditions (I'm not in space, I have to look through the Earth's atmosphere). I placed an order on a brand new Meade 12" LX200ACF with Meades rebate package of a free solor scope. It sounded great and I thought I made my decision. But I wanted to do more with astrophotography, and I was limited on the capabilities of the Meade SCT. I didn't like the wedge anymore, and I wanted a German Equatorial Mount (GEM). Also I was weighing in on the manufacturer warranty. Meade had a one year warranty. Anyway, I decided to go with Celestron on its high definition scope series called the Edge HD. I broke down after doing a lot of research and found the 11" Edge HD with the CGE Pro mount. It has a two-year warranty and the high tech GEM with HD optics suited well for astrophotography (so it says right). I made the purchase after looking at the high cost and I knew what I wanted. Why spend so much on it? It's a deserving gift to myself and it's not a purchase I make very often. I knew I could afford it right? I finally received it on January 10, 2011 and set it up in my living room in awe. I couldn't believe how massive and heavy this thing was. It's built like a tank and the go-to motors are in working condition. Things are a little different with my Celestron. I am so used to being a Meade person. Time to get used to being a Celestron person. It will be different, but it should be fun. Looking forward to buying extra accessories like the Hyperstar 3 for fast exposures.

Oh yes, I was one of the fortunate ones with some clear skies to enjoy this spectacular lunar eclipse on the first night of winter. It is hard to see through a scope smaller than 12", however a 3" scope can make out the ring structure. We truly are blessed in West Texas to have amazing skies (away from the cities of course). I'm headed back down to Fort Davis again on June 10 to do some more astrophotography. I'm hoping for clear skies. I need to do some more wide field images of the Milky Way as the core rises in the southeast. If you are fortunate enough to see this magnificant site, then I highly recommend it.
Unfortunately not too many people get to see this site in urban areas where lights block out the Milky Way. 2/3 of the U.S. population cannot see the Milky Way anymore do to light pollution. I'm hoping to get some great images so I can post them on the blog. Haven't done much lately since I've been busy this summer doing things with the family. Been working like crazy with the Midland Planning and Zoning to work out some wordage on the lighting ordinance. Things are starting to go really well and hopefully I will be on the commission starting in August. I don't really know the advantage for this other than I get to voice my opinion on the type of outdoor lighting being installed on new construction.

Me

Me. Need I say more? I've been doing astrophotography for about four years now. Long way from being a professional. My wife thinks I am a nerd, but I never considered myself so. My images are nothing compared to some of the great ameteur imagers out there. I have come a long way, however. I've been looking through telescopes for about 11 years now. My equipment includes a 12" LX200GPS from Meade. It is a go-to scope which uses GPS satellites to track images. I also have a small refractor riding on top of the main scope to serve as my autoguider, and finally a Meade DSI (Deep Sky Imager) CCD camera. When I do widefield images, I use the Canon EOS Xsi.

M64, Black Eye Galaxy

M64, the Black Eye Galaxy has a dark band of absorbing dust in front of the bright nucleus giving the name "Black Eye." Light pollution is the easiest form of pollution to get rid of. Just turn out a light and the problem is solved right? This is true if you want to live in darkness. I don't want to live in darkness, however I have installed interesting light fixtures on my house to set an example of what good lighting is. What is good lighting? Good lighting is lighting that doesn't spread out so my neighbors can see it. It is light that never goes into the sky to illuminate clouds and the bellies of birds. If we can all get educated on proper outdoor lighting, then the effects of light pollution won't be seen as much. There will still be a little sky glow from reflected light that hits the ground, but it won't be as bad as a light shining straight up to brighten the sky. Poorly designed lighting is the root cause of light pollution and the ignorance of "More is better." More is not better. This is a myth. If a full cut-off fixture was installed, then most of the light will be shining downward where it belongs and not to the side or up. You will find that installing a full cut-off fixture will provide downward light where it is needed and you can use a light bulb that uses less wattage because the full cut-off fixture allows all the light to shine on the subject. A full cut-off fixture will eliminate glare and wasteful light. Light that shines to the side is called "light trespass" and this affects our vision during the night. It also causes unwanted glare. We as Americans waste approximately one-billion dollars a year to illuminate clouds. Clouds should be dark at night and not glowing orange right? It's a win-win situation for everyone. Astronomers get their stars back, penny pinchers save money, and others eliminate wasteful carbon emissions.
Also, more lighting doesn't cut down on crime. For example, my neighbor has her lights running from dusk to dawn. However, the other night, her vehicle was broken in to. Did these lights help or not? The answer is no. Criminals love lights. They need lights to do their criminal work. Also, overlit areas create glare where a criminal can hide behind the glare. You won't see the criminal because you will be shielding your eyes from the glare. Ever tried driving down the road after work going west? It's hard on the eyes without a sun visor to get rid of the glare isn't it. You may not see the car in front of you if the sun is low on the horizon. Think about it.

Dark Skies

Hello.
